Time to Talk - New Animation Highlights Benefits of IAPT Talking Therapies for Older People

A new animated video, produced by NHS England which promotes talking therapies for the treatment of common mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, has been launched.

Aimed at a range of audiences including the general public, particularly older people, the two-and-half-minute animated video highlights the benefits of IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) evidence-based psychological therapies, available via GPs or by patient self-referral.

The animation narrates how Bernie, an older person caring for his partner who has dementia, becomes depressed and anxious. Bernie is referred to a local IAPT service and recovers after a course of therapy.

The animation highlights that:

  • Talking therapies help people with common mental health problems such as depression.
  • The IAPT service can also help people who experience low mood or anxiety as a result of managing a long-term health condition such as diabetes or heart disease.
  • Feeling anxious or depressed is not uncommon, with one in four adults experiencing a mental health problem during their life.
  • Experiencing anxiety or depression is not an inevitable part of ageing and can easily be treated through talking therapies.
