Shropshire CCG - Primary Eye-care Assessment and Referral Service (PEARS)

Red eyes, sore eyes, itchy eyes? If you are worried about a recent eye condition - there is now a new free service to offer advice.  You can access this service if you are registered with a GP in Shropshire or Telford and Wrekin.

PEARS (Primary Eye-care Assessment and Referral Service) is provided by local accredited opticians, who can offer appointments if you need advice or treatment for a recent eye condition.

Shropshire Community Directory is your local gateway to information on over 2,500 community groups, clubs, societies, support groups and self-help groups throughout Shropshire. 

Locally, the National Health Service, Local Authority, Voluntary Agencies, patient representatives and members of the public have combined to help produce an awareness of the local Self Help Groups available for different Long Term Health Conditions, under the banner “Self Help Shropshire.”

The health related Self Help (Peer Support) groups are made up of people with a particular health condition and those that care for them (carers).

They are able and willing to share their experiences and knowledge to offer practical and emotional support to each other, providing valuable support and often based in the local area.

A group meeting format varies and can include a guest speaker, a social element and a time to ask and answer questions.

Sight Loss Opportunity Groups (SLOG) provide information and support for people with sight loss living in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.

There are four Sight Loss Opportunity Groups in Shropshire which offer all kinds of interesting and adventurous activities to encourage people who have sight loss to keep active, stay confident, meet and make new friends and have some fun.

Groups meet in Ludow, Oswestry and Shrewsbury. There is also a cycling group which meets in Shrewsbury.

Sight Loss Shropshire

Sight Loss Shropshire (formerly Shropshire Voluntary Association for the Blind - SVAB) aims to improve the quality of life of visually impaired people living in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

Groups are listed that meet in Bridgnorth, Ludow, Market Drayton, Newport, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and West Telford.

Sight Loss Shropshire - See & Hear Van

The See & Hear Van is a purpose-designed vehicle which visits locations across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

On board, volunteers provide advice and information about support, services and specialist equipment for anyone with a visual and/or hearing impairment.  Samples of some of the equipment are held on the van, including specialised magnifiers and software for use on computers.

The van receives direct support and advice from the sensory impairment services of Shropshire Council and there is a schedule of places and dates for planned visits.

Shropshire Council - See and Hear Exhibition

The annual See and Hear Shropshire Exhibition takes place in May and is organised by the See and Hear Shropshire Partnership, which includes Shropshire Council’s Vision Technology and Training and the Sensory Impairment Team, Sight Loss Shropshire and the Guide Dogs Association.

This is for everyone to try equipment and learn more about the support on offer to help improve the quality of life for those with sensory impairment, such as hearing or sight loss. The event will also share information and advice on the preventive role around health issues that could lead to avoidable sight or hearing loss.

Vision technology and training Shropshire (VTTS) is based in Ludlow and provides opportunities for people with visual impairments to use technology. They also offer assessments on low-vision equipment, advice and information relating to visual impairments and organisations such as RNIB, Shropshire Voluntary Association for the Blind and the services they provide.

Sensory Inclusion Service (SIS)

The Sensory Inclusion Service (SIS) is provided jointly by Shropshire Council and Telford and Wrekin Council in partnership with the NHS.

The aim of the Service is to provide high quality support services to children and young people with sensory impairment (hearing and/or visual difficulties) and their families and schools.

Support services are geared to achieving inclusion and access to education and the broader community. A wide range of specialist services are offered in partnership with the NHS and the voluntary sector.
