Shropshire Council - Community Directory

Shropshire Community Directory is your local gateway to information on over 2,500 community groups, clubs, societies, support groups and self-help groups throughout Shropshire.

Locally, the National Health Service, Local Authority, Voluntary Agencies, patient representatives and members of the public have combined to help produce an awareness of the local Self Help Groups available for different Long Term Health Conditions, under the banner “Self Help Shropshire.”

The health related Self Help (Peer Support) groups are made up of people with a particular health condition and those that care for them (carers).

They are able and willing to share their experiences and knowledge to offer practical and emotional support to each other, providing valuable support and often based in the local area.

A group meeting format varies and can include a guest speaker, a social element and a time to ask and answer questions.

Listings of Self Help (Peer Support) Groups and links to these different groups are available in Shropshire Council’s internet based Community Directory.

Shropshire Council-Disabled Toilet Key (RADAR Key) Scheme

A RADAR Key (Royal Association of Disability and Rehabilitation) is a large, conspicuous, silver-coloured key that opens all the 9,000 plus accessible disabled toilets in the UK. At 4 inches long, it is designed to be easier for people with physical impairments to find and place into the lock.

Only those people considered eligible are allowed to have a key. Official RADAR keys normally cost about £5, including postage and packing. But Shropshire Council provides them free of charge.

A National Key Scheme guide is produced for purchase each year, which lists the location of every RADAR toilet on record. A smartphone app is also available, with added walking and driving directions. Both are also £5 but check first with Shropshire Council in case they can provide anything free.
