Find out about our midwife-led unit review

We are currently reviewing midwife-led unit (MLUs) services across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.

What services are being reviewed?

There are a range of community services available through midwife-led units. Antenatal, Birth, and Postnatal care are provided in midwife-led units in Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Telford. The Trust also provides Antenatal, Postnatal and Home birth care in Market Drayton and Whitchurch.

The review is looking at how the midwife-led services meet the needs of local families and fulfil national guidelines.

Our review is split into several phases:

  • Phase one - Phase one of our review involved a desktop exercise where we collected information about the MLU service. This included national and local best practice as well as collecting existing feedback from local stakeholders.
  • Phase two - Phase two of our review is looking at more detailed information about the service and asking local people for their feedback. We commissioned ELC Works, a specialist organisation, to hold in-depth interviews with women, their families and staff who are using and working in the midwife-led units. Their feedback is now being used to help us better understand what is working well and what can be improved.

As part of phase two we also held a series of workshops in September across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin. Women, their families, professionals and others with an interest in these services came together to discuss what the future service model could look like.

Thank you for taking part in our workshops and helping to share your experiences, all of your feedback is now being used alongside our phase one data to help us shape future services.

Next steps

At the moment no decisions have been made.

ELC Works, the company directing the engagement activity on behalf of the CCGs, will provide specialist analysis of local feedback and the report will be published on this website.

There will also be a further co-design event in October for invited participants, including clinicians, patients and partners who participated in the community workshops. This group will listen to all of the feedback collated by ELC Works and help us to shape our vision for midwife-led services.

This vison will be shared and discussed at the midwife-led services programme board and with future Governing Body meetings. We will continue to give regular updates on our website.

An update message from Dr Jess Sokolov, Shropshire CCG’s Clinical Lead for the midwife-led services review,  28th September 2017

Dr Sokolov said: “Over the past few months we have been listening to patients, staff and clinicians to understand what is working well and what can be improved in community midwife-led services. We would like to thank everyone that has been involved in these workshops.

“Our review into community midwife-led services is in the early stages and no decisions have been made. The next steps will be for us to analyse this feedback, alongside our data, to develop a strategy for community midwife-led services. This will help inform us whether change is needed and what this could look like.

“Our review is still ongoing and I would stress that no decisions have been made. As a GP and clinical lead, my priority is to develop quality, safe and responsive community midwife-led services that meet patient’s needs. We will be keeping local people informed throughout this journey to improve services so please check our web site for updates.”
